from a wide range of piano manufacturers
The Piano Shop normally has a stock of around 40 grand pianos and upright pianos in our Leeds showroom, typically a selection from such renowned manufacturers as Bechstein, Steinway and Bluthner. The Piano Shop usually also has several antique pianos and artcase pianos in its Leeds showroom.
The Piano Shop specialises in traditional acoustic secondhand pianos from historic British piano manufacturers such as Broadwood, Kemble, Chappell, Knight and Challen.
Challen was Britain's premiere piano manufacturer during the 1930's, and has the distinction of building the largest grand piano ever at 11'8". The piano was built for King George V's silver jubilee in 1935.
One of the UK's most historic piano manufacturers is John Broadwood, who commenced production in 1774 and has supplied many of the leading composers of the day including Elgar, Liszt and Chopin. Production was transferred to Norway in 2003 but is now returning to England with a restoration and conservation workshop in Kent.
Most of The Piano Shop's traditional secondhand pianos are veneered with wood, giving each piano a unique character in contrast to the uniform black polyester which is typical of modern pianos. No two secondhand pianos at The Piano Shop have a wood veneer which is the same - every piano has a slightly different grain and colouring which is truly unique.
Being finished in wood veneer rather than polyester is itself friendly to the environment, in addition to which is the satisfaction of knowing that owning a treasured possession from a previous generation will continue to provide pleasure for years to come rather than using up earth’s resources in a newly manufactured piano.
