The environment in which an acoustic piano is placed can have a big impact on both its pitch and its keyboard action, and ultimately on its maintenance cost and re-sale value. This is because the humidity in the home can affect several parts of an acoustic piano.

If the humidity is too high, the keys may stick; if it is too low, the keys may rattle. In addition, high or low humidity levels can affect the pinblock, allowing strings to lose tension and making the piano sound out of tune, whilst too dry an atmosphere can cause the soundboard to develop cracks which can affect the tone.

Because of the importance of correct humidity, The Piano Shop advises the installation of a humidistat which will regulate the humidity of the air inside an acoustic piano.

The humidistat recommended by The Piano Shop is manufactured by the market leader, Dampp Chaser. Further information about the Dampp Chaser humidistat and its installation can be given on request.
