Upright Pianos

An upright piano is usually the first type of acoustic piano which a beginner pianist uses, and it is often an upgrade from a keyboard or digital piano. The tone and control of a traditional acoustic piano is hard to match even with the most sophisticated electronic or digital instruments.

Bechstein £2,650 Ref U071/56

Some teachers prefer not to take on students who do not have an acoustic piano, because the different touch and sound of an electronic or digital instrument can make it difficult for a student to learn proper control of the piano.

For this reason, many piano teachers recommend that students buy a good secondhand acoustic piano rather than a new keyboard or digital piano where much of the cost is invested in technology rather than sound and touch control.
